What this website is for

Cathedral

My main aim with this site is simply to illustrate what I was talking about in this blog post: Promoting Communities on Newspaper Websites .

I hoped to demonstrate what was possible, and how community-building software such as JomSocial could be used in a news website environment. I also wanted to demonstrate the potential of open source and free software such as Joomla.

I also wanted to develop my own skills, and felt that the best way to do that was probably to go away and create a site.

This is a demonstration website. It's not meant to be a model site - in other words, it's not meant to illustrate the best way to do things. The layout may not be great, the features may not be the features a newspaper website should have and it may well be buggy in places.

But it is supposed to illustrate some possible ways of doing something that newspapers could do more of. I think newspapers, especially local papers, could do more to encourage interaction on their sites and turn the sites themselves into resources which could be used by local people.

There is, of course, no such newspaper as the Solar Sentinel, no real news on this site and no real advertising.
